The first episode of this anime is well... let's see. The basic synopsis is that Kirby, a mysterious ball of mochi, lands in a small town called Cappy Town, who is lead by King Dedede and his servant Escargoon. Why a group of gorges is being lead by a giant penguin with a hammer I'm not sure, but he's a big poo. Anyway, King Dedede likes monsters and often orders them from some evil company called N.M.E. (Nightmare Enterprises). Kirby befriends two twins, Tiff and Tuff, to help him get through. Meanwhile, a mysterious monster is eating all the sheep, and the citizens begin to suspect Kirby. King Dedede eventually grows jealous of him and tried to throw him out. So, now it's up to Tiff, Tuff, and the even more mysterious Meta Knight to find out the real monster. As far as pilots go, I guess this episode was alright. The story is interesting, and the action is very exciting. However, is it a good first episode? No, not really. It doesn't exactly set up the show too well. It introduces us to the characters, but we don't really know what's going on. For example, when Dedede calls up N.M.E. we don't know who is that guy on the big screen. Episodes 3 and 4 do a better job as pilots then the actual pilot and that's the main part. Well, might as well introduce everything in the show while at it. There's Kirby, who is portrayed as a baby in this show, while in the games he was portrayed as a mere child. I really do like Kirby, because we see him slowly grow as a warrior and, you got to admit he is CUTE!
Fire Kirby (Kirby Comes to Cappy Town)
Also, there's the twins Tiff and Tuff, who, to be honest I don't like at all. They're cliched and to be honest, so far not that interesting. I guess I like Tiff better than Tuff due to her motherly figure and her dedication to protect Kirby, but Tuff grows to be intolerable sometimes. Especially in later episodes, trust me, Tuff is one of the most hate able characters in the series. Notice I said one of the most. Kind Dedede and Escargoon, again, I don't like. Escargoon is a little better than King Dedede, but when together they are really annoying. Imagine Team Rocket from Pokemon, except with fairly annoying voices and a little more annoying. I think one of the show's main flaws is that they completely antagonized King Dedede. In the games, he was more of an anti hero, he didn't like Kirby and he was selfish, but in the same time he wasn't evil. But in this episode alone he attempts to beat Kirby with a hammer before even meeting him and he imprisons a while bunch of innocent cappys. Plus, the english dub gave him the same voice as the plant from Little Shop of Horrors. That gave me whiplash the first time I heard that. But, there is one character I absolutely adore. Meta Knight. Later when you learn his backstory you will grow attached to him. I love his relations wiht Kirby, his personality, how noble he is, his fighting style, god I love almost everything about Meta Knight. However, the first time I saw him I got disappointed quick because, well, the english dub gave him a spanish accent. But, I grew comfortable to it.
Also, the animation is mixed for me. The hand drawn stuff is gold but the mixture of CGI really downgrades it. They use CGI on King Dedede, Escargoon, and Kirby and I really think they shouldn't. If they kept it all hand drawn t would be even better. But for the episode, eh, it's all right. Story - 69/100 Though the monster is obvious, I like the pacing and it's overall well presented Animation - 79/100 The climax was very well presented and we saw a lot for a first episode. The monster looked cool, but it didn't' really pick up till the third act. Moral - N/A This episode doesn't have a moral, it's just to get the show started. However, I don't care about morals that much, especially on TV shows so if it doesn't have one I just won't grade it. Overall - 74/100
