Have I ever talked about Don Bluth? YES! Ok, maybe I mentioned it a little earlier. But, like I said, he made some pretty good films. And these are his best! 5. All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) Image as found on http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/all_dogs_go_to_heaven/ Strangely, this got negative reviews, like on Rotton Tomatoes it has 57%, all because it was on the same weekend as The Little Mermaid. I personally think it's way better. Ok, let me tell you what it's about, it's about a dog (Happy) who dies (Sad) and goes to heaven (Happy) but goes back to get revenge on the one who killed him (MOMMY!). Ok, the plot is conflicting. The humor and music is for kids but the story is for adults, so it's kind of confusing . But, both groups would love this film equally for the good songs, interesting characters, and a fun experience that proves you cna't keep a good dog down. Though, did they really need to add the fact that nothing's a suprise in Heaven, it only leaves flaws. But, the ending is kind of sad, but what is it? Well, let me be suprised. Ok, fine, I'll stop quoting songs from this movie. What else can I say, the more you watch this the more the sun will shine. (Ok! I'm done!) The Land Before Time (1988) Image as found on http://www.moviepostershop.com/the-land-before-time-movie-poster-1988 Ok, this is considered by many to be his best (It must be, it got 12 other sequels and a TV show), but I put it this low on the list because really, it's too short. I know they had to cut some scenes, but it's kind of obvious in the final product. And while we're having a cutesy little flying bird dinosaur whatever scene, we could've gotten into more in the side characters. Wouldn't it be interesting to see how the others got seperated from their parents too, and how Spike got left behind and remained in the egg. But, overall what he gave us is great, and the characters, though underdeveloped, are really good. Go check it out, it's one film that won't go extinct in a very long time. Really, that many sequels, it even says so on the poster, 'The Adventure that Started It All'. Image as found on http://www.moviepostershop.com/the-land-before-time-movie-poster-1988 3. Anastasia (1997) What! A Don Bluth film from the 90s? Well, this is his highest grossing film and I can see why. It's a great film! What gets me is how realistic it is. Ok, not the one with the talking bat and the evil old dude, the one with Anastasia trying to find her roots. The songs just feel so natual, which also adds to the realism. Though, I am kind of mixed on the evil guys. Bartok and Rasputin are great villians (Rasputin actually existed too), and their villian song, oh yea, it's one of the best you'll ever hear. Plus, it's ok, just a little distracting, and without it this movie could really be something different, but it's still a really good movie. I don't care if it's historically incorrect, it's called fiction! So... yea, go watch it, but don't leave, I'm not done yet. The Secret of NIMH (1982) Image as found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_of_NIMH Aw, a film about talking mice adventures, let's see it 90 minutes later... Mommy, hold me! Yes, this is Don Bluth's darkest film, eispecially on the third act. But, it is told very well, and is actually Don Bluth's most realistic film, since Anastasia has that sub-plot that makes an ice cream cone eating a mountain range in one bite look, well, still unreal but it's with that! Rats under scientific experimentation become even more intellegent than humans, brilliant, mice being able ot talk to them because mice and rats can speak to each other, brilliant, the crow being able to talk to mice, what!? It's about a worried field mouse who's son has a disease that could kill him if he steps outside, and ther house is in danger by the farmer's plow. So, she consults the Mighty Owl, who tells her to consult the rats in Thorn Valley (Seriously, how can all that fit in a thorn bush?) and they try to move her house! Sounds like a certain Pixar movie. Fun fact, did you know this movie had only a budget of $1.7 million dollers, half of how much money it costs to make a Dinsey movie at that time, and half the time. Sadly, it did only fairly well in the box office with lack of promotion and going up against major films like E.T. Ok, it has a few down points, like Jeremy the crow is kind of annoying sometimes and sometimes it's more dark than it needs to be, but it's a treat for adults, older children and... more older children. That's actually one of the more mild parts of the film too. Image as found on http://www.filmjunk.com/2009/07/28/neil-burger-penning-the-secret-of-nimh-remake/ 1. An American Tail (1986)
Image as found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_American_Tail Don Bluth teams up with Stephen Spielburg to make an american tale called, uh, An American Tail. It's about a mouse named Fievel Mousekewitz (Wow, try growing up with a last name like that), who goes to America with his family but gets seperated from his family. So, he treis to get back home while ridding America of cats. Yea, kind of puts the No Cats In America song to waste doesn't it. Why is it my favorite of the bunch? It's totally depressing! If Wizard of Oz can brighten people up this movie can bring people down. And, it maeks the ending so much more heartwarming. Don Bluth has a saying, "Kids can handle anything as long as there is a happy ending". Well, yea, but this is kind of pushing it isn't it. The sogns are great, the characters are fun, and it may make you cry at the end. This is one american tale that can be enjoyed by people all over the world, again and again. I never saw the sequel, but I think this can't be topped. I highly reccomend it, unless if you're easily depressed, then I would reccomend it if you're willing to stay away from high places and sharp items, and no neck ties either! So, that's the best of Don Bluth, and yes, I have all of these films on DVD, and I give all these this rating All Dogs Go to Heaven A- Land Before Time A Anastasia A The Secret of NIMH A+ An American Tail A+ Love your work Don Bluth, and you're a heavy inspiration to me. If i could ever meet you, I would be proud, and I hope I can use your work as a role model to work on my films. So, for the rest of you, good day and good night.
