Are you brave enough to continue? THERE'S A BEAR!!!!!! Image as found on http://feministing.com/2012/06/26/brave-has-a-gender-problem/ Oh my god that's awesome! But we're not here to praise films... wait, we are. And we might have to, it's Pixar! And this is considered Pixar's final fate. Heh heh. Cars 2 is considered their first bad film, and now this will decide if they're at their Dark Ages or not. Well, I kind of like Cars 2. Yea, it lacks emotion, original story, and McQueen is as boring as motor oil, but.... eh, I don't know where I'm going with this. Now I was brave enough to see Brave, and I will tell you if it's worth the risk. Ah, Merida is Pixar's first female protagonist. Merida is a pretty good character. She's tough and speaks her own mind and fate, but in the same time she can get spoiled, but good hearted. But I can't really talk about her without talking about Queen Elinor, her mother, who, quite literally, turns into the Mother Bear of the family. I can really see how she cares about Merida and her family, and she's also a very realistic mother. Plus, when she turns into a bear, priceless. Now for one of the funnier characters in the movie, King Fergus. But, I kind of like him more in the second half, because that's when his fatherly qualities grow and his love for his family and his grudge against bears shines out. The triplets are pretty much the scene stealers of the movie. That's the family, now for the witch. Or, as she prefers to be called, Woodcarver. She could be a great character, but her motives aren't really clear. Did she intend to put a curse on Merida, or was it accidental. She seems pretty suspicious, but she's obviously focused on her wood carving career. She would be more of a likable character if we just knew if she's evil or not. The 3 lords are funny and 2/3 of the princes. Young Macguffin's whole joke is that he can't speak right, he only speaks gibberish. Some people might find that funny, I find it annoying and uncomfortable. And that's coming from the one who likes Mater in Cars 2. Now for the most likely main villain, Mordew the demon bear, and I can't talk about it without spoiling the plot. But I will say this... Image as found on THAT'S NOT WINNIE THE POOH!
The plot may resemble Brother Bear, but it isn't too distracting for me, especially that I dislike Brother Bear. It gives us a taste of the scottish culture and how dark it can get. Just like the animation, one of Pixar's best. So, what do I think in the end.... Plot - 69/100 A better Brother Bear Characters - 78/100 A majority of them are really great Emotion - 87/100 Focusing on Merida and her mother, the emotion is what really stands out. Animation - 86/100 Really enchanting Overall - 80/100 Out of Pixar's filmography, it's probably right in the middle. Far from the best, but it's far from the worst either. It's kind of hard to pick out specific flaws in the movie, so I can't really talk bad about it, but it does lack the Pixar charm. It's a great film, but it doesn't resemble anything of Pixar's style. But, think about it as a film alone, it ain't too bad. Go see it, if you dare.
