As I said in my top 5 disney sidekicks list, one of my favorite animals is the mouse. And films about mice are no exception (NIMH, American Tail, and, well, The Great Mouse Detective). Today, we talk about a film before The Little Mermaid in 1985, what I consider to be one of the most underrated Disney movies yet, The Great Mouse Detective.

So, the best part of this movie is the chemistry by our protagonist and antagonist... Basil and Ratigan. Basil is how you do a detective for kids. He's the kind of person who uses intellegents to get out of problems, and though he's one of the best, he is a jerk and does make mistakes. Ratigan, I got to say, is one of my favorite villians of all time. He's hilarious (Thanks to Vincent Price), and, guess what he sings! 2 songs! If it wasn't this movie I would cry, but I love each and every single song in the movie, even if there's only 3. So, Ratigan is awesome, and how the two work off one another is gold! It's the icing on the cheesecake. Now, Dawson, I will admit, I don't really care for as a character. He just seems like the nice sidekick, but, I still don't mind him. Think of it like this, a gift wrapped smile, but he put on too much tape and it's a pain to unwrap, but you're happy with the result.
Olivia, the little girl who's father got kidnapped by Professor Ratigan, is sweet, though she didn't exactly stand out. Toby, the dog, is one of the cutest little puppies you'll ever see! There's also Ratigan's evil cat who eats other mice... and the little kids cry now! Fidgit the Bat can bite the nerves of some people, but to me, he has enough good lines to avoid the Top 5 Annoying Evil Sidekicks. So, the characters, though some have their flaws, are all likeable, the best of the best of the best (I did intend to stretch that out) is the main characters. Oh, and if you want to know about Barthalomew, he dies 3 mintues after he's introduced, and the little kids run away now!
The story, though not really a mystery, is more of an exciting action adventure. It has it's hare of heartwarming moments, comedic moments, and, one part I really have to give praise for is the climax. Thsi si one of best exectued climaxes you'll find in an animated feature. (SPOILER: Basil and Ratigan are in Big Ben, battling it out to save Olivia. Basil and Olivia escapes, but Ratigan went insane and turned into a savage, beating Basil up! Later, they both fall off of the clock, with Basil saving himself. Ratigan is such of a good villian that I felt sorry for him when he died, and I don't experience this much with villians. Rest in Peace Ratigan, and say hi to the devil for me! SPOILER OVER!) If I have one flaw with the story, it may be that the plot itself is kind of predictable and, as I said earlier, it's far from a mystery. but, Roger Rabbit had that same problem too, and it's still a classic. So, the songs, I have a little problem. The Ratigan songs are great, but the bar song is just mediocre, and there's only 3! In Disney levels, that's a big crime! But, I ignore this to give my final thoughts, which won't include songs!
Plot - 69/100 Unfortunantly where the movie goes down with it's predictable manner, it's fun enough.
Characters - 82/100 Though some has their flaws, each one I like.
Comedy - 74/100 Blends comedy in action perfectly
Heart - 75/100 This is a sweet flick, but it focuses mainly on it's action traits, and I couldn't love it more!
Overall - 75/100 This is a classic that more people need to hear about. It's action packed, funny, and sweet. I reccomend it to everyone who deosn't have a phobia of mice, sorry Mom, but I had to buy the DVD. So, good day and good night... wait, next up is my 10th review, what could be so special to earn this? Check me out next week to see the lucky winner.
A 75/100 The Great Mouse Detective
