Hey, it’s me again with another Top 5 list. You know, one of my favorite animators of all time has to be Don Bluth, fact; I like him better than Disney! Yes, he made some pretty bad stinkers, but his good ones are some of my all time favorites, and like other films, some of the most popular characters are the sidekicks. And, I’m dedicating this list to my 5 favorite animated sidekicks out of all 11 of Don Bluth’s films. Enjoy… OR I WILL FIND YOU! 5. Tiger (An American Tail 1986) As found at http://www.reocities.com/enchantedforest/2372/american.htm The reason he’s so low on the list is because he isn’t very important to the story and he’s barely in it. Plus, he can get pretty annoying. But, the reason he is on this list is because of two reasons… one, HE’S VOICE BY THE LATE LEDGEND DOM DELLUISE! (Seriously, what’s with all the D’s in this company anyway?). Two, is that, to the character’s credit, he sings a pretty good song “A duo”. Not my favorite, yet it always sticks in my head. Plus, even though how annoying he is, there’s something about that kitty cat that makes you want to treat him instead of bathe him. Plus, HE’S VOICED BY THE LATE LEDGEND DOM DELLUISE! 4. Jeremy (The Secret of NIMH 1982) As found at http://www.fanpop.com/spots/animated-movies/picks/results/278913/who-favorite-animated-character-voiced-dom-deluise Dom Delluise is the king of sidekicks, he is, he really is. Jeremy is just like Tiger, he’s annoying, barely any point to the plot, yet you got to love him. The reason he’s flying higher than Tiger (Besides the fact that he’s a crow!) is that he’s actually a main character! Though times you wish he wasn’t, and it feels like he’s there just to be there (Though I can see why, this is Don Bluth’s darkest; it’s almost illegal not to add in a comic relief). Jeremy is an annoying yet loveable sidekick that gives me a smile when ether he’s on screen, though every time I do watch that movie I wind up having some sort of bird for dinner is that irony or fate? 3. Petrie (The Land Before Time 1988) As found at http://rideagainstaids2010.blogspot.com/2010/07/day-25-land-before-time.html The Land before Time, it’s hard to choose a sidekick because there are like, 5 of them, all equally as loveable. Cera is a round character who’s stubbornness is quite loveable, Ducky, who’s so sweet you just want to eat her right up, Spike, a, uh, he’s, uh, something. But, in the end I chose Petrie, why? He’s Petrie, that’s why, now go home! He can be annoying (Wow, I’m using that word a lot!), but he’s also loveable (Now that I think about it, everyone on this list so far is like that), and, well, he’s actually really funny. He tortures the group just as much as the group tortures him, and, (SPOILER ALERT) at the ending, I gave a moment of silence just for him. That was why I was overjoyed to see him rise up from the dead, or in this case, the water, in fact, how did he climb up anyway? Does he even have hands? (SPOILER ALERT RESOLVED) 2. Itchy (All Dogs Go to Heaven 1989) As found at http://www.fanpop.com/spots/all-dogs-go-to-heaven/picks/results/204654/whos-favourite-character Well, the 80s were Don Bluth’s best period, and Itchy is the superior of Dom Delluise characters. That’s because I see a more emotional side to Dom’s acting style and Itchy and Charlie are a perfect duo. And don’t refer to Tiger’s song! Anyway, Itchy is a dog who’s best friends with Charlie, and though he doesn’t want to, he helps Charlie with his scams. The scene that stands out for me was his fight against Charlie, after he’s been living up to his life’s guilt as a thief and being beaten up (I’ll tell you, Itchy looks really bad after that), he had enough and stands up to Charlie. That’s probably Dom’s best performance. Another stand out scene is the Robin Hood scene, while Charlie tells his version of Robin Hood, and Itchy doesn’t like it because it reminds him of his acts as a thief. I didn’t get that at first, but, when you think about it, Itchy is probably the most emotional character in Don Bluth history. Itchy is up here not only because he’s funny, but also for his emotional side. Now, number one is… Rocko (Pebble and the Penguin 1995)
As found at http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/movies/Pebble-And-The-Penguin/Rocko/ What else can I say; he’s my favorite Don Bluth character of all! Why I love him, he isn’t the annoying one… he’s the one being annoyed! His relation with Hublie is really interesting, because he’s not only slowly starting to accept him as his only friend or conquer his dream of flying, but it’s also a Student and Teacher relation. Rocko teaches Hubie on how to fight Drake (An awesome Don Bluth villain), but also Hubie teaches Rocko how to be nice and to be a friend. Before I saw this film, I all ready knew the plot, I all ready knew what was going to happen to him, yet, when it happened in the film, I was really sad! Though, at the end of the film, Rocko does something that I'm not even sure is possible. Anyway, his standout scene has to be the “Looks like I’ve Got Me a Friend” song. Yes, a lot of people hate it, but the reason I love it is that Rocko is just as annoyed as you are. Rocko, what else can I say, rocks! So, that is my opinion on the top 5 don Bluth sidekicks there are. No matter if they’re a duo (DON’T SAY IT!), or the heart of the movie, they are the most memorable part of these films, and never forget, the sidekicks are the characters we got to appreciate the most, because they’re the ones who guide us through our childhood, they’re the ones who teach us lessons, they’re the ones who will always be by us throughout our lives, they are our life. So, if you’re wondering about any of these films, check them out, in my opinion, they’re all classics! So, good night, good day, I need to think of a catchphrase, and one last thing. Too bad Don Bluth isn’t making any more movies, because then we could’ve got more loveable sidekicks to love too! So, Don Bluth, if you’re reading this, I love your walk and you’re one of my role models in the film industry. So, good night, good, eh, you know it, bye!
